Telling Time

Two ways to practice — read a clock and type what it shows, or set the hands to match a time. Pick one to start.

Part 01

Meet the Clock

An analog clock has 12 numbers arranged in a circle and two hands that spin around the center. Each hand has its own job.

4:00

Two hands, two jobs

The short, thick hand is the hour hand — it tells you which hour it is. The long, thin hand is the minute hand — it tells you how many minutes have passed since the hour started. Both hands are the same color on a real clock — you tell them apart by their length, not their color.

Part 02

Reading the Hour Hand

When the minute hand points straight up at 12, the hour hand points exactly at the current hour. But as time passes, the hour hand creeps slowly toward the next number.

3:00 — hour hand right on the 3
3:30 — hour hand halfway to 4

The hour hand is always between two numbers

Once the minute hand starts moving away from 12, the hour hand starts drifting too. If it's about halfway between two numbers, you're at the half hour — like 3:30 above.

Part 03

Reading the Minute Hand

The minute hand takes a full 60 minutes to travel all the way around the clock — one trip past every number. The trick is to count by 5s as you go clockwise from the 12.

Minute hand on the 7 → count 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35

Handy shortcuts

Half past the hour means the minute hand is on the 6 (30 minutes). Quarter past means it's on the 3 (15 minutes). Quarter to the next hour means it's on the 9 (45 minutes).

Now let's put both hands together and read a whole clock, step by step.

1

Find the hour hand

The short hand is sitting between the 7 and the 8 — so the hour is 7.

2

Find the minute hand

The long hand is pointing at the 7 on the dial.

3

Count by 5s to the minute hand

5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 — that's 35 minutes.

4

Put it together

Hour 7, minute 35 — the clock reads 7:35.
