Skip counting means counting forward (or backward) by the same amount every time, instead of counting by ones. It's a fast way to count groups of things — and it's the first step toward multiplication!
When you skip count by 5, you say: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 — always adding 5 to get the next number. You already skip count without knowing it: nickels are worth 5 cents, a clock's minute marks go by 5s, and you probably count your fingers and toes by 5s and 10s.

A number is even if you can split it into two equal groups with nothing left over. If one is left over, the number is odd.
Skip counting by 2 always lands on even numbers — 2, 4, 6, 8, 10... The numbers in between are odd: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9...
Quick trick: look at the very last digit. Numbers ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 are always even. Numbers ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 are always odd — no matter how big the number is!
A number pattern is a list of numbers that follows a rule. Once you figure out the rule, you can predict every number that comes next — like solving a mini mystery!
In a growing pattern, the same number is added each time. Look at the gap between each pair of numbers to find the rule.
The rule here is +4, so the pattern keeps adding 4 to get the next number.
In a shrinking pattern, the same number is subtracted each time — the numbers get smaller as the pattern goes on.
The rule here is −6. Countdowns, timers, and "how many are left" problems often follow shrinking patterns.
If a number is missing from the middle of a pattern, first find the rule using two numbers you do know, then apply that rule to fill the gap.
Since 8 → 13 is +5, the rule is +5 — so the missing number is 13 + 5 = 18.
