Needs vs. Wants

Every choice about money starts with one big question: do you need it, or do you just want it? Let's learn the difference — then practice spotting it.

What's a Need?

A need is something you must have to live, stay healthy, and be safe. If you didn't have it, it would actually cause a problem.

What's a Want?

A want is something that's nice to have and can make life more fun — but you could still live a healthy, safe life without it.

Worked Example

A sandwich for lunch is a need — your body needs food to keep going. A candy bar after lunch is a want — it's a fun extra, not something your body must have.

Here's a helpful trick: needs and wants can be about the same thing. Sneakers that fit your feet are a need. The most expensive, newest sneakers are a want — the "extra" part is what makes it a want.
